This one-week intensive will explore ensemble performance and musicianship through the lens of American Soul music from the 1950s and 60s. Intermediate and advanced instrumentalists and vocalists from ages 14 to 18 are welcome. Repertoire will be determined by instrumentation and will feature the music of artists such as Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, and others. In addition to performing the music, students will explore the context of the style and selected songs. No audition is required, but a short (60-90sec) recording of the student’s playing will be requested to assist in music selection.
