Basic Function

The Production Manager will possess an aptitude for creative and proactive problem solving and should show comfort and proficiency taking initiative during all steps of the production process.


Characteristic Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and contribute to a safe and respectful work environment.
    • The Production Manager serves as the primary production liaison between incoming shows and the Flynn production team for the full ‘advance’ process. The Production Manager will:
    • Contact artists and/or tour management to request technical information 
    • Receive technical forms and stage plots from Flynn Programming department, artists, or traveling productions.
    • Determine production needs, crew staffing, and schedule requirements for each show.
  • The Production Manager disseminates technical specifications of the Flynn venues to incoming show teams; reviews artist show contracts and technical specifications; provides budgets, schedules, and labor estimates. 
  • The Production Manager compares show equipment requirements with Flynn inventory and coordinates vendor rentals of technical gear and backline when necessary.
  • The Production Manager maintains relationships with City of Burlington departments including Burlington Police, Burlington Fire Department, and the Department of Public Works. The Production Manager collaborates with the Flynn production team to secure necessary City permits for Flynn shows.
  • The Production Manager works in collaboration with the Flynn production team to directly supervise the load in, rehearsal/sound check, performance, and load out of shows in Flynn venues and Flynn-produced shows outside of Flynn venues.
  • The Flynn is an IATSE venue. The Production Manager communicates pertinent requirements of the Flynn’s IATSE contract to incoming show crews, ensures show budgets and schedules are created in compliance with IATSE rules, and fosters a positive relationship between the Flynn production team and the Flynn’s IATSE stagehands.
  • As Production Manager, oversees or acts as scenic, lighting, and/or audio designer for Flynn-produced shows. Works closely with event producer to develop, construct, and implement creative vision. 
  • Provides administrative support for the Production team including processing payroll and answering production-related questions from other Flynn departments or external stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned, such as researching and/or overseeing theatrical maintenance and capital improvement projects.


Supervision Exercised 

  • Administrative and partial functional supervision of two Associate Production Managers.
  • Functional and partial administrative supervision of IATSE Stagehands.


Supervision Received

Supervision is received from the Director of Production.


Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in professional theatrical production management, technical direction, stage management, and/or aspects of production design. Touring experience is a plus.
  • Prior experience collaborating with and/or managing IATSE stagehands.
  • Thorough working knowledge of all areas of theatrical production and presentation.
  • Thorough working knowledge of Windows operating systems, and the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Excell, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Basic working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours; a significant number of evenings/weekends/holidays as assigned.
  • Knowledge of Tessitura, Artifax, and other industry-specific software is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and financial management skills as well as supervisory experience is necessary to facilitate the duties of a manager successfully and efficiently in this department. Department projects and productions span from small to very large inter-department festivals, attractions, and events.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and prioritize in a multi-task environment is essential. Must be able to translate the artistic and financial concerns of the Flynn while ensuring the safe and successful mounting of productions/presentations.


Desired Qualifications

  • Direct experience with theatrical tour production, on the road or as a local stagehand.
  • Experience with outdoor events, festivals, and non-traditional performance art.
